How to choose the right dining table
Choosing the ideal dining table is a task that may seem trivial, but in reality has a considerable impact on the comfort and well-being of those who use it.
To accommodate 8 people, you need a table that allows easy communication, offers sufficient space for unrestricted eating and doesn’t encroach on the surrounding space.
Here are a few things to consider to help you determine the optimal table size for eight guests.
A standard dining table is usually 30″ high.
As for width, the norm is between 36 and 42 inches.
As for length, this can vary, but a table seating eight should be between 72 and 96 inches long.
For optimum comfort
Optimal comfort at the table requires sufficient space for everyone to stretch out and move around without disturbing other guests.
That’s why a 36″ wide table is a good place to start. This width guarantees comfortable individual space for each guest.
However, if you want to go beyond that, a table 42 inches wide or more will offer considerable extra space.
This can be particularly beneficial if you plan to serve at the table or decorate the table with centerpieces.
For length, a table that seats eight should measure a minimum of 72 inches.
This gives enough space for everyone to sit comfortably.
However, a longer table, between 84 and 96 inches, will offer your guests more space and facilitate the circulation of food and drink.
Choosing the right shape
The shape of the table is another factor to consider. Rectangular tables are the most traditional and are ideal for a group of eight.
An oval table, provided it meets the above dimensions, is also a good option. However, a round table, while charming, can pose space problems.
A round table 72 inches in diameter will seat eight, but it requires a larger dining room and can make it difficult to access items placed in the center.
Make sure everyone has enough space to feel comfortable. Allow at least 24 inches per person to ensure sufficient comfort.
This means that for four people, the table width should be at least 48 inches.
And don’t forget how you’ll be using the table. If it is to be used for activities other than meals, such as board games or homework, a larger table may be advantageous.
But if it’s strictly for dining, a smaller table might be more appropriate.
In short, for a table for eight, aim for a length of between 84 and 96 inches and a width of between 36 and 42 inches if you opt for a rectangular or oval table.
If you choose a round table, it should have a diameter of at least 72 inches. Make sure you have enough space in your dining room to accommodate your table.
By following these guidelines, you can create a dining space where eight people can share a meal in comfort and conviviality.
